My Artistic Journey
Art has always been an integral part of my life, acting as a medium through which I express my innermost thoughts and emotions. My artistic journey began in childhood with simple sketches, slowly evolving into painting and collage both on canvas and unconventional surfaces such as furniture and lamp shades. This progression reflects my inclination towards experimentation and innovation. As a mature student, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Fine Art (with honours) at Sheffield Hallam University. There I delved in to various artistic expressions and theories. For my dissertation I explored the intriguing use of masks in ancient cultures for ritual and performance. My final piece for this study was an installation featuring a haunting film on the medieval Fasnacht festival in Germany's black forest.
My current art practice is centred around commission-based work. I particularly enjoy upcycling lampshades with vintage fabrics and incorporating sketches. Travelling allows me to draw inspiration from different cultures. Beyond commissioned pieces, I have illustrated and produced a Tarot card deck, an Oracle deck and a graphic novel.
The Essence of My Art
When I paint or sketch, I dive deep into a state of flow where time seems to stand still. My art works are more than mere aesthetics; they encapsulate my experiences, dreams and the world as I perceive it. My art is strongly influenced by my love for ancient history, mythology and folklore. These fascinations, that have been with me since my childhood, continue to shape my artistic endeavours today. My influences are diverse including Symbolism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, as well as elements from the 1970s folk horror genre. The eerie elements of growing up in the 1970s and 80s mirrored in the decor, toys, films and television of the time continue to play a significant role in my art.
Inspiration and Influence
Nature, human emotions, and everyday objects inspire me. Different textures, the play of light and shadow or the subtle emotions reflected in a person's eyes often find their way into my work. Equally, the dynamic bare surfaces of lamp shades present a unique challenge and opportunity to bring my visions to life in a three-dimensional form. Influences from renowned artists and art movements, as well as personal encounters, have shaped my style and technique over the years.
Looking Forward
As I continue to explore and expand my boundaries, I aim to create pieces that resonate with viewers on a personal level. Working on both canvas and lamp shades has provided me with dual platforms to portray the depth and breadth of my creative expressions. This journey of self-discovery through art is ongoing and I am excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
